Introduction
Does your area experience frequent power outages? Do you often experience power outages while you are sleeping at night, causing you to stumble in the dark and bump into something heavy, like a door or wall, causing injury? If so, this post, “How do I set up auto off bedside lamp?” is for you. Read on to the end to find out how to set up this bedside light that automatically turns off.
You can easily assemble it yourself and use it immediately. If you attach it next to your bed, you can wake up at night without fear and go out safely. Read on and you will see in detail how to set up and operate your light yourself. The special feature is that even if you are new to electronics, you can easily assemble this light by following the instructions described here at a low cost. The circuit is very simple and versatile to build and enjoy the value.
If you wake up at night and the electricity is cut off, you can turn on this light near the bed as soon as you touch it. You will have enough light and time to walk towards the door in the dark without hitting any objects.
According to this design, you will get continuous light for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, it will automatically turn off. If the light is on and if you want the light off or for less than 5 minutes light, the light will turn off when you touch the off-earth part of the sensor. If you need, you can increase or decrease the time the light stays on by changing the values of the resistor R1 and the capacitor C1 in the circuit.
Special features

In this circuit CMOS IC 7555 is used. The BFY 50 transistor works as a switch. 3v electric bulb is used to provide light. A 4.5v battery is connected to operate the circuit. The delay time for turning off the light is set to 5 minutes. The sensor touch pad described below is used to switch on and off the light. It can be reset if needed. Simple circuit design and easy to assemble. The pin connections of the IC 7555 are shown in the figure below. The IC is 8 pin DIL type.

How to operate
To turn the light on, touch the ON and EARTH parts of the sensor pad with your finger. The light will turn on and continue to light for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the light will turn off automatically. To turn off the burning light in less than 5 minutes, touch the OFF and EARTH portion of the sensor pad with your finger. The light will go off. This is how the ‘Auto-off bedside lamp’ works. The working resembles the functioning of the logic levels of the digital circuits.
Circuit diagram

Note the circuit diagram of the ‘Auto off bedside lamp’ shown here. A very simple circuit. Understand its connections and how the components are connected to each other.
A very small number of components have been used. The electronics components are easily available. The circuit can be assembled at a very low cost. The list of required components is given below.
Spare Parts List

How to assemble.
You can easily use a solderless breadboard to assemble this ‘Auto off bedside lamp’ circuit. Otherwise, you can also use a general-purpose printed board. Since there are fewer parts, a smaller vero board is sufficient. Be sure to use an 8-pin socket to connect the IC 7555. This is a CMOS IC. So it is necessary to handle it carefully. 3 volt light is enough to give sufficient light in the darkness.
However, If you want a little more powerful light, you can use a bulb with a higher wattage. Then, the BFY 50 transistor is to be fixed with a suitable heat sink to handle the higher load of the bulb. You can use an accumulator (rechargeable battery) instead of a dry battery. Use a small piece of printed board to make a sensor touchpad. The touchpad structure is shown in a separate picture. You can make the touchpad yourself by observing the figure given below.
How to make the Touch Pad?
Below is a picture of the touchpad for the Auto off bedside lamp’. Please refer to it and set it up. Take a small piece of PCB and remove the copper portion in two places, so that we get three islands of copper-clad board. connect the piece of the strip as shown in the circuit diagram.

Where to set up the light.
Place this auto-off light within arm’s reach near your bed. If you need to get up when the power goes out, reach out to the sensor and touch the on portion. The light will start to turn on. As mentioned earlier, the light will stay on for 5 minutes and then turn off automatically. If you don’t need the light right away or want to turn it off within 5 minutes, touch the earth part of the sensor and the off part together in the light, the light will turn off.
Conclusion
Many people have realized its usefulness and have built this ‘Auto off bedside lamp’ circuit as a DIY project. You too can easily assemble and use it by watching this post. If others need it, you can assemble it yourself and hand it over to others. A very useful gadget.
